📷 Upload: blog/images/right-cycle-size-for-kids-mumbai.jpgThe single most common mistake we see in Mumbai is parents buying a cycle that is one size too large — thinking the child will "grow into it." This is the #1 reason children struggle to learn cycling. A cycle that is too big prevents the balance learning that is essential in Sessions 1–3, increases the risk of falls, and makes the whole experience frightening.
This guide gives you the complete, certified-trainer-approved cycle size guide for children in India. Use it before buying — and WhatsApp us if you are unsure about your child's specific height.
The most important fit criterion for a beginner child (and for our balance-first training method) is simple: when your child sits on the saddle with the seat at its lowest position, both feet should rest flat on the ground. Not tiptoeing — flat.
This allows our trainers to use the balance-first method correctly in Session 1. The child scoots with their feet, builds balance confidence, and is never in a situation where they cannot touch the ground to stabilise. Tiptoeing = bad. Flat feet = perfect.
🚨 Most parents buy a cycle one size too large. If in doubt between two sizes, always go smaller. The child will grow — but they need to learn balance first.
| Child's Age | Height Range | Wheel Size | Trainer Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–3 years | 85–100 cm | 12 inch | Balance bike only (no pedals). Avoid standard cycles at this age. |
| 3–5 years | 95–110 cm | 14 inch | Good size for first cycle. Seat at lowest — feet flat is critical. |
| 4–6 years | 105–120 cm | 16 inch | Most common size for first cycle training sessions at Experative. |
| 6–8 years | 115–130 cm | 18 inch | Strong learner age. 18-inch works well with balance method. |
| 7–10 years | 125–145 cm | 20 inch | Most popular size across Mumbai. Excellent for society compound learning. |
| 10–13 years | 140–160 cm | 24 inch | Transition size. Check saddle height — feet still need ground contact at lowest. |
| 13+ years / Adults | 155 cm+ | 26 inch | Adult size. Standard adult cycle. Seat height is adjustable for training. |
Note: These are wheel diameter sizes, which are the standard way cycles are sold in India. When you go to a shop in Mumbai and ask for a "16-inch cycle," they will understand immediately.
Always bring your child to the shop. Never buy based on age alone — children of the same age can vary significantly in height. The in-shop test:
For learning purposes, brand name is secondary to size and quality of brakes. What matters:
In Mumbai, brands like Hero, BSA, and Firefox offer good quality in the ₹2,000–₹5,000 range for kids' cycles. Decathlon's Btwin range is also popular and well-priced. Avoid very cheap unbranded cycles — the brakes and joints often fail quickly under learning-session use.
Secondhand cycles are fine for learning — as long as you check: brakes work correctly, tyres are not cracked or flat, the chain is not rusted, and the saddle height adjusts. Many OLX Mumbai listings have good-condition kids' cycles at half the new price. WhatsApp us your child's age and height and we will advise exactly what to look for.
At our Kandivali East training centre, we maintain cycles across all children's sizes. If you book a centre session (₹599), a correctly sized cycle is provided at no extra charge. This is ideal for Day 1–3 when size is most critical. Once your child achieves independence, they can then practice on your own cycle at home.
Centre session ₹599 — cycle provided. Trainer at your society ₹649. Full safety gear always free. Balance-first method. Most kids ride independently in 6–8 sessions.
